Job Summary:
The Grocery Department Manager works to maximize sales and profitability for their department by providing excellent customer service and maintaining department and store cleanliness. The Grocery Department Manager maintains a well-stocked department, follows store procedures, and keeps an eye toward improving processes and product offerings whenever possible. The Grocery Manager supervises all Grocery Department employees and is expected to work 5 days per week for a total of 45 hours, including one weekend day.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide exceptional service in all areas
- Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked department on the sales floor and in the stock room
- Assure proper stocking and rotation of all department products, including backstock
- Participate in meetings with vendors and department managers, including but not limited to weekly manager meetings and marketing meetings
- Maintain timely email, phone, and in-person communication with vendors and customers
- Coordinate product additions and pricing information with vendors, department managers at other WCM locations, and the pricing department
- Work with the store manager to plan future ad features and AppCard promotions
- Track sales and order products to meet customer demand and increase profits, maintaining adequate inventory on all products
- Ensure incoming grocery shipments are unloaded efficiently and safely
- Control department expenses by enhancing operations, meeting budgeted goals, and controlling shrink
- Minimize out-of-stock and overstock product to ensure fresh merchandise
- Ensure compliance with safety and sanitation standards mandated by government regulations
- Train staff on job duties, department procedures, and proper/safe use of equipment
- Delegate work for maximum productivity, and motivate staff to achieve department goals
- Monitor staff progress and provide feedback regularly; coach and complete performance evaluations
- Regularly verify product pricing and replace price tags and/or signage as needed
- Promote grocery items using announcements, special displays, signage, cross merchandising, weekly ads, and seasonal plans for end caps and shippers
- Keep up with product and merchandising trends in the area by visiting other stores, visiting relevant websites, talking with customers, etc; implement improvements in the Grocery Department in order to keep WCM relevant and competitive
- Determine optimal staffing levels and schedule staff for full coverage, not exceeding the maximum sales per labor hour
- Attend food shows as directed by upper management
- Conduct quarterly inventory for the department
- May be called upon to manage store in absence of the Store Manager and Assistant Store Manager
- May be expected to take on additional store duties, such as running the cash register and closing the store as needed
- Should expect to closer the store at least 1 night per week

- Leadership, sales, and merchandizing skills
- Previous experience working with vendors and ordering product
- Ability to travel to trade shows, seminars, and other retailers
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma/GED
- Previous experience in grocery retail experience is required
- Previous experience in Grocery Department management, preferred
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of standing, walking, twisting, lifting, bending, pulling, pushing, and reaching
- Must be able to frequently lift up 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds
- Frequent use of carts and pallet jacks (manual and electric)
- Frequent use of step ladders and step stools
- Ability to read small print on labels and shelf tags
