Corrosion and Materials Staff Engineer
Job Description Summary
The Corrosion & Materials Staff Engineer Supports the Area Business Teams (ABTs), Fixed Equipment, Inspections, Capital Projects, and Turnaround Departments by applying knowledge of damage mechanisms and appropriate materials selection to run-and-maintain MOCs, continuous improvement efforts, repairs, capital projects, and inspection findings. The Corrosion and Materials Staff Engineer (CME) is also responsible for implementation and maintenance of Corrosion Control Documents (CCDs) and Integrity Operating Windows (IOWs), supports the site Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) program, and champions corrosion-related special-emphasis programs (SEPs) as part of Fixed Equipment Mechanical Integrity (FEMI). The Staff Engineer will work to set long-term corrosion and metallurgical engineering goals, evaluate complex technical assessments and develop structured approaches to ensure asset integrity and reliability. The Staff Engineer will also use his/her expertise and knowledge to facilitate guidance and vertical mentoring to the refinery organization on corrosion, materials selection, repair recommendations as well as asset management while providing horizontal support to other areas within the Reliability & Inspection Department.
PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead in developing TRC’s Corrosion & Materials Engineering strategic roadmap to ensure equipment/asset integrity, code and regulatory compliance and reliability.
- Serve as site-SME in the area of corrosion control/identification, metallurgical enhancements, welding/brazing, coatings, chemical treatment/cleaning and represent TRC during internal/external network and industry meetings.
- Provide corrosion and materials engineering support to develop and update unit Corrosion Control Documents (CCDs), Corrosion Loop and Damage Mechanism Diagrams and Integrity Operation Windows (IOWs) and work with various stakeholders to ensure successful roll-out and implementation.
- Lead and mentor Inspection, Fixed Equipment, Operations and Technical Services in the development and validation of CCD’s, IOW’s and Damage Mechanism Reviews.
- Develop, submit and manage overall budget and schedule for expense and capital projects as appropriate.
- Provide technical support and expertise to all area teams throughout refinery in a collaborative manner so to solve complex welding, chemical cleaning/treatment, metallurgical and corrosion-related challenges.
- Review and recommend immediate/temporary/permanent repairs for identified anomalies or deficiencies including upgrade/replacement or corrosion mitigation requirements.
- Monitor chemical treatment program and make recommendations for chemical usage/optimization, technical compatibility with a cost/benefit focus.
- Work closely with key stakeholders including Corporate MI SMEs, Inspection Department, Fixed Equipment Engineering, Tech Services, etc. to support long-term equipment reliability initiatives and fitness-for-service evaluations of assets.
- Perform technical and economic analysis to justify engineering improvement and recommended priorities.
- Lead in the development of corrosion control strategies for refinery units and equipment and lead in the implementation of appropriate corrective action to address corrosion and metallurgy challenges.
- Support site-wide development, management and implementation of risk-based and inspection strategies for equipment assets including piping, vessels, reactors, fired heaters, boilers and other appropriate HC processing equipment.
- Support in the development and reporting of site-specific reliability and corrosion-related KPIs.
- Participate in critical site-evaluations such as Process Hazard Analyses (HAZOPs) and Process Safety Management (PSM) reviews.
- Develop and review engineering standards and practices.
- Participate in and lead various Root Cause Failure Analysis initiatives as SME.
- Support the Turnaround organization as required during both planned and unplanned outages and shutdowns as required.
- Serve as a safety champion throughout the refinery complex by ensuring full compliance to critical safety requirements including appropriate use of PPE, support of safe work practices and participate in all safety-related activities.
- Other tasks/projects as assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Metallurgical or Chemical Engineering required.
- 8+ years’ experience working in a refinery/petrochemical facility required.
- Familiarity with design, construction and inspection codes/standards: API 510, API 570, API 653, API 571, API 574, ASME Section I, ASME Section VIII, ASME B31.3, NBIC, NACE and AWS.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, lead investigations, organize and prioritize work schedules.
- Professional Engineering license/AMPP/API certification preferred.
- Experience with SAP is preferred.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment required.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills required.
