SUMMARY
The Glass Teaching Assistant supports instructional efforts in glass art classes or workshops, assisting both students and the primary Glass Art Instructor. The Glass Art Instructor works with youth students (14 years and older) and adult students in art classes or workshops. The Glass Teaching Assistant supports the Glass Art Instructor with the classes they created and assists with executing creative, authentic, and project-based lessons and workshops in various glass artforms, including in the hot shop, cold shop, and other glass artforms with youth and adults, inspired by the TMA collection. Working closely with the Glass Studios Programs Manager, Assistant Director of Glass Studios, and the Glass Art Instructors, the Glass Teaching Assistant helps to inspire students to build their glass art skills and connect with TMA. Contracts for this position are issued per class each term, dependent upon class enrollment.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
The Glass Teaching Assistant performs the following essential duties on-site at TMA.
  • Support glass art workshops and classes by:
    • Assisting the Glass Art Instructor to execute lessons based upon themes or topics that are inspired by the Museum’s collection, special exhibitions and in response to student interests.
    • Assisting the Glass Art Instructor to present gallery and studio activities.
  • Participates in self-reflection, training and evaluation processes as scheduled.
  • Assists the Glass Art Instructor by providing basic instruction to TMA students, on a pre-arranged basis, to allow them to create project in the glass studio and learn the basics of glass art.
  • Assists the Glass Art Instructor by helping students to guide their efforts and assure safe use of materials and equipment.
  • Adheres to all safety practices standard in an art glass production and studio facility and any additional safety practices implemented by Museum management.
  • Always acts as a visitor advocate by acknowledging visitors and striving to make them feel welcome, comfortable, and eager to return.
  • Other duties as assigned.
RELATIONSHIPS
  • Reports to the Glass Studios Programs Manager.
  • Works closely with Glass Art Instructors, Assistant Director of Glass Studios, and other Education staff.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of completed undergraduate education in glass-related studies.
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a specialization in glass is preferred.
  • Requires at least 1 year of experience assisting/supporting glass art educators or glass artists.
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, COMPETENCIES AND ABILITIES
  • Has a passion for art education and demonstrated ability to assist with implementing glass artmaking lessons.
  • Familiarity with glass art materials in hot and cold glass and contemporary art practices.
  • Knowledgeable of or has a willingness to learn about the Museum’s collections.
  • Willingness to adjust and adapt methods to accommodate emphasis on Museum pedagogy and resources.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and ability to work with people of a wide variety of ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
  • Experience, interest, and enthusiasm in working with students in an art museum, classroom or cultural setting.
  • Reliable and dependable. Must be able to attend sessions and work flexible hours (weekend and evenings required).
  • Basic computer skills: ability to use internet and e-mail; knowledge of Microsoft Office preferred.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work takes place in a glass studio environment with elevated temperatures and on-going exposure to hot glass, broken glass and other materials requiring careful handling. There is a strong physical component of this position requiring lifting or moving materials or equipment as necessary to perform all duties. Must be able to communicate verbally. Prepare for workshops and events, which includes moving equipment and supplies as appropriate. May occasionally be exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
