Job Description:
The 100% externally funded wetland sensor technician will install and maintain environmental sensors in wetlands in northwest Ohio on behalf of the Lake Erie Center and the multi-university LEARN (Lake Erie and Aquatic Research Network) associated with the H2Ohio wetland restoration initiative. This role will be based at the Lake Erie Center and will be responsible for the assembly, installation, connectivity, and maintenance of multiple sensors in H2Ohio wetlands. The specialist will assist with ordering, receiving, and transporting sensors and related equipment. They will receive training and guidance from the wetland team member and will also assist the team on field trips. The specialist will attend LEARN meetings, communicate and coordinate with faculty and LEARN staff across the overall wetland effort, and will provide data and reports to their supervisor and the LEARN organizers.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education/experience/licensing:
• MS degree in engineering, environmental Sciences, or related field or BS degree plus two (2) years of relevant work experience, including studies towards a graduate degree.
• Experience with electronic circuitry, wiring, soldering and hand power tools such as drills and saws.
• Field work in wetlands requires a moderate degree of physical fitness and strength. Must be able to lift, carry, equipment and launch a small vessel (canoe or kayak 50-70 lbs) for moderate distances over uneven terrain.
• Use of computer proprietary programs used to set up, communicating, and calibrating sensors. Ability to use common software including MS Word to generate reports, MS Excel to analyze data, and MS PowerPoint to prepare and give technical presentations.
• Use, maintenance, calibration, and deployment of water quality sensors such as YSI Exo.
• Ability to navigate and operate in wet and dry field sites including wetlands by wading and in floating craft such as canoes, kayaks, and boats.
• Valid drivers’ license.
Communication and other skills:
• Effective communication skills (oral and written)
• Ability to work without close supervision and to make decisions concerning weather conditions and other logistical factors.
• Ability to work closely with students, faculty, and other staff to maintain research efficiency of the project.
