The Toledo Clinic's Oncology Department, located in Maumee OH, is seeking a full-time Medical Assistant. Qualified candidates will have an MA credential (RMA, CMA, CCMA) or the ability to obtain such credential within 60 days of hire. The hours for this position are Monday-Friday (8:00-4:30).
Toledo Clinic is offering a $2,000 Sign-On Bonus to qualified Medical Assistants. If qualified, sign on bonuses are payable within 30 days of hire to employees that have active and verified credentials (ex: RMA/CMA/CCMA/CPCT-A). For employees that have not yet obtained or renewed their credential, the Sign-On Bonus is payable once the credential is obtained and verified. After one year of service, qualified Medical Assistants may be eligible for an additional $2,000 Retention Bonus.
General Summary
This clinical position is responsible for controlling patient flow for physician/NP/Chemotherapy appointments. Is responsible for assisting physicians and NPs with patient care, clerical, clinical, environmental and organizational tasks. Is responsible for records the provider needs during appointments that was not obtained by chart prep and necessary to complete visit. Is responsible to prepare the patient for the provider visit including collection and entry of vital signs, weight, and other pertinent clinical information needed for Meaningful Use and Review of Systems documentation. Is responsible for operation of the assigned office lab functions including venipuncture, runs, and documents lab tests/results.
Supports the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) by working with patients, families, providers and other staff to promote timely access to needed care, provide daily continuity of care coordination, and coach patients, families and care givers to understand the patient care plan and self-care management responsibilities.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Consistently arrives at work on time and adheres to regular work schedule.
- Control patient flow in assigned clinic to minimize patient wait time.
- Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned which may include:
- Checking schedules and organizing patient flow.
- Accompanying patients to exam/procedure room.
- Assisting patient as needed (walking, transfers, specimen collection).
- Collects patient information:
- Height, weight, allergies.
- Medication Reconciliation.
- Health Maintenance.
- Social, medical, surgical history.
- Review of Systems.
- Utilizes EMR to record patient specific data.
- Identifies trigger questions for Social Determinants of Health and notifies providers of needs.
- Performs venipuncture on patients as needed and sends timely. Including collection of kit lab draws.
- Fulfills environmental responsibilities as assigned:
- Setting up and assisting with bone marrow procedures.
- Cleans exam rooms between patient visits.
- Cleans equipment.
- Verifies equipment is in working order and takes appropriate action if it is not.
- Follows maintenance schedule for all biomedical equipment.
- Orders, sorts, and stores supplies.
- Restocks exam rooms.
- Sends and receives patient medical records.
- Access all health system portals to obtain information that is needed during visit not obtained during chart prep process.
- Administration of subcutaneous/intramuscular injections
- Given under direction of provider/APP to proceed with injection
- Documents correctly in chart. Pulls medication from Nucleus on same day as injection is given.
- Coordinates with physicians re: missing test results to determine if appointment should occur. Chart prep to be addressing this – but if when reviewing charts and it is noted the MA will take it to the provider to review.
- Completes forms and requisitions as needed.

Education:
- Medical assisting degree or diploma from an accredited school.
Preferred:
- 1 year of medical office or lab experience.
- Previous clerical experience in a physician office.
- Clinical medical office experience.
- Knowledge of health care field and oncology.
- Knowledge of specific assisting task related to oncology.
- Knowledge of information that must be conveyed to patients and families.
- Skill in performing assistance tasks appropriately.
