Hours: Monday - Friday 9:00 am - 6:00 pm at our main campus on Secor Rd

General Summary:

Assists laboratory staff in meeting workload demands including venipuncture and capillary puncture on patients

Works under the supervision of the Lab Manager

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

Example of Essential Duties:

  1. Receives logs, handles and processes various body fluids, exudates or scraping, and stores in an acceptable manner.
  2. Verifies patient/specimen identification and informs technical personnel and/or Supervisor of any discrepancies.
  3. Performs venipuncture and capillary puncture on patients.

4. Properly prepares all types of lab specimens according to established procedures which include special requirements for reference work to outside laboratories or special studies.

5. Performs simple maintenance of equipment; i.e. reads and records temperatures, cleans centrifuges and refrigerators.

6. Maintains accurate and thorough records of what reference specimens have been picked up and/or sent out to other labs.

7. Processes and transports infectious waste to a centralized pick-up location and signs the appropriate manifest.

8. Performs and records qualitative determination for urine glucose and acetone according to established procedures.

Other Essential Duties May Include (but are not limited to):

  1. Transports specimens from other lab collection sites to the main lab in a timely and efficient manner.
  2. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

Required:

- Knows, understands and adheres to all laboratories, Clinic, HIPPA and/or OSHA safety standards.

- Basic knowledge of laboratory techniques involved in routine tests.

- Knowledge of medical terminology.

- When presented with "STAT" request(s), stops all other routine activities and promptly addresses the STAT.

- Promptly delivers STAT specimens to technical work area and informs appropriate technicians in a non-threatening manner.

- Consistently arrives at work, in professional attire, on time and completes all tasks within established time frame.

- Seeks appropriate tasks when primary tasks are completed and assists co-workers as needed.

- Demonstrates adaptability to expanded roles.

- Adheres to all Toledo Clinic policies and procedures

Education:

- HS diploma or GED.

- Phlebotomy diploma from an accredited school required.

Preferred:

- Phlebotomy certification and 6 months previous experience preferred.

- Certified Phlebotomist preferred.
