Key Responsibilities

The Architectural Historian is responsible for researching, evaluating, and documenting historic architectural resources in support of a variety of projects. This role contributes to the identification and assessment of historic properties, preparation of technical documentation, and coordination with internal teams and external stakeholders throughout the project process.

Duties Include

  • Conduct archival research and field investigations related to historic buildings, structures, districts, and other cultural resources.
  • Prepare technical reports, survey documentation, and evaluation materials in support of historic preservation and regulatory review efforts.
  • Collaboration and coordination with project team including planners, environmental professionals, engineers, architects, agency representatives, and clients.
  • Review and assess architectural resources for historical significance, integrity, and eligibility within applicable regulatory frameworks.
  • Interpret applicable preservation standards, agency guidance, and client requirements.
  • Assist in the preparation of presentations, exhibits, correspondence, and supporting documentation for project deliverables.
  • Participate in site visits and fieldwork, including photography, note-taking, and documentation of existing conditions.
  • Ensure work products comply with project requirements, professional standards, and applicable regulations.
  • Support the organization and maintenance of project files, research materials, and documentation records.
  • Contribute to a collaborative team environment and support project schedules and deliverable deadlines.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Requirements

  • Degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, History, Architecture, or a related field
  • Experience in architectural history, historic preservation, cultural resources, or a related field
  • Strong research, writing, and documentation skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork and prepare clear, organized technical deliverables
  • Familiarity with historic resource survey methods and regulatory review processes
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and clients
