Job Description:

Ohio's Aspire programs (formerly known as ABLE) provide free services for adult individuals who need assistance acquiring the skills to be successful in postsecondary education and training, and employment. Local programs offer classes at various locations, and on different days and times to meet the diverse needs of students, Owens Aspire services, based out of the College and Career Readiness Center, include Adult Basic Education/High School Equivalency (formerly GED), English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and College Preparation Classes (CPC). Classes are located throughout the metro‐Toledo area and at all Owens Community College campus locations, including Findlay.

This full-time Adult-Basic instructor position will work with the program to ensure state and student goals are met in academic and workforce preparation.

Essential Functions:

  • Instruct at least 3 (three) up to 4 (four) if needed, Aspire classes or as directed by Aspire Director, following all State Aspire E‐guide directives, policies and procedures. Be accountable to state goals for progress and performance in regard to measurable skill gains, testing policies and student follow-up.

  • Provide assistance and service to Curriculum Instructor in developing and executing curriculum design, new class offering, and staff on-boarding.

  • Other data tracking and student follow up as needed. Participate in and provide Professional Development as needed. Be accountable to Program, College, and State handbooks and policies.

  • Substitute instruction for another instructor when able/available.

  • Substitute to conduct orientation sessions if necessary.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Effective classroom management skills.

  • Research‐based instructional strategies for various types of learners.

  • Ability to help students transition to employment and/or post-secondary education.

  • Accommodate students with learning disabilities.

  • Experience in instructional strategies that help adults Improve basic academic skills at least one educational functioning level.

  • Effective presentation, written and oral skills, especially focused on adult learners.

  • Ability to pay strict attention to details and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to use basic technological tools.

  • Ability to accurately document student goals, progress, and outcomes in a timely manner (proficiency in Excel/Teams preferred)

  • Fluency with online learning platforms such as Aztec, IXL, etc. and curriculum platforms such as Evernote, Google Classrooms etc.

  • Ability to manage several projects at once.

  • Strong communication skills and team focus.

  • Must be flexible, dependable and have a positive attitude.

  • Ability to travel to multiple and frequent off-campus sites not only for instruction but for follow-up and support

  • Understanding of diverse student populations, multi‐level learning environments, lesson planning based off state standards and demonstrated proficiency and efficacy with distance education software.

  • Ability to independently trouble shoot classroom and technical challenges without firm direction.

  • Have a decision-making process to make programmatic decisions based on policy, while demonstrating attention to reasonable flexibility when appropriate.

  • Knowledge of Adult learning theory

  • Knowledge of State Aspire Policy

Essential Functions:

  • Bachelor's degree (Master’s degree preferred in education or related field)

  • At least one year's experience in working with adult students and following State Aspire policies and procedures.

  • At least one year's experience working with students with disabilities education: k‐12, post‐secondary, developmental education, Aspire or related fields,
