Job Description:

Essential Function:

  • Assist in configuring and troubleshooting of network change requirements including routers, switches, packet shapers, firewalls and network related appliances in a multi­vendor network environment.

  • Effectively communicate with peers and other teams to report and resolve network hardware, software and operational issues.

  • Assist in monitoring and implementing necessary security best practices across the organization's network environment. Collaborate on implementing security improvements based on current technology security standards and offerings.

  • Establish, document, and maintain detailed written records/diagrams of network equipment location, maintenance history, performance information, as well as network configurations and procedures. Maintain backup images of network devices for timely recovery.

  • Keep current on the use of diagnostic tools and techniques utilized in the troubleshooting and repair of network infrastructure/cabling, design and configuration.

  • Assist network team in planning, directing, and prioritizing in the development of strategies and solutions consistent with organizational objectives.

  • Assist in the research and design, implementation, administering, monitoring and troubleshooting of the College's core network infrastructure and access layer for administrative and academic local area and wireless network infrastructure and cable plant.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Monitor and maintain the College's core network infrastructure and access layer for administrative and academic local area and wireless network infrastructure.

  • This position requires in-depth technical knowledge of Cisco routers, switches and Access points. Network security: Checkpoint, Juniper SRXs. Network monitoring, baselines and performance tuning; Solarwinds, Orion- NCM, NPM and Netflow (Network tuning- packet shapers; Exinda). Cisco Nexus load balancers. Juno OS, 1OS, NX-OS and fiber optics.

  • Strong fundamental knowledge of communication protocols; TCP/IP, UDP, DHCP, DNS, SLP, SNMP, HSRP, Multicast routing, EIGRP and VRF.

  • Identify, troubleshoot and resolve network related issues.

  • Syslog analysis and network assessment techniques.

  • Prioritize network troubleshooting and maintenance.

  • Maintain network security (e.g. ACL's) for users, switches and routers.

  • Configure and troubleshoot network equipment; routers, switches, packet shapers, firewalls and network related appliances.

  • Critical thinking, customer service, problem solving, decision making and information gathering.

  • Ability to work on numerous diverse projects simultaneously.

  • Ability to assist other personnel in network related hardware problem resolution and work order documentation.

  • Ability to convey technical recommendations effectively.

  • Ability to effectively facilitate discussions and serve as a technical resource for complex projects or difficult troubleshooting requests.

  • Ability to participate in an on-call rotation.

  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced, high-stress environment while working closely with both customers and team members.

  • Ability to keep current with developments in the networking field by attending vendor sponsored seminars, training classes and through the use of self-study.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Minimum Education Requirements:

  • Associate degree or two-year technical certificate

  • Ideal candidate will have a combination of associate or bachelor's degree in Information Systems/Computer Science or related area and Network+ or CCNA.

  • Network+ or CCNA required. State mandated certificate (Criminal Justice Information System Security & Awareness Training) must be obtained within 30 days after hire date or already achieved.
