Program Overview
- A Mechanical Apprentice is an entry-level maintenance position that combines paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction to become an industrial mechanic, also known as a Master Tradesmen.
- The apprenticeship program consists of 8000 combined hours of on-the-job training & classroom instruction (prior schooling will be appropriately credited)
- Starts at $29.88 per hour, with increases every 1,000 hours successfully completed
Schedule
- You will work full time Monday-Friday, 6:00am – 2:00pm
- You will go to school in the evening (this is considered paid time). Libbey has partnered with Owen’s Community College for school coursework.
- This schedule integrates practical work experience with formal education.

As a Mechanical Master Tradesmen Apprentice at Libbey, you will train and work alongside a Master Tradesman who performs a variety of skilled trades within areas of pipefitting, carpentry, plumbing, metal fabrication, welding and painting, to gain practical skills and knowledge in the following:
- Comply with all safety requirements set forth by the Environmental Health & Safety Department
- Work from specifications, drawings, and/or verbal instruction to install, fabricate, repair, troubleshoot, etc. various pieces of plant services, structures, equipment, and related components.
- Perform a wide variety of rough and finished carpentry work. Use hand and power tools to cut, plane, shape, fit, and assemble.
- Perform piping fitting and plumbing work Install and service equipment associated with the control and monitoring of fluids and gases contained within plant pipe systems.
- Service and repair fire protection systems in the plant and outside warehouse.
- Perform metal layout, fabrication, erection, repair, and removal work throughout the plant.
- Perform hot and cold bending, cutting, welding, and forming of metals.
- Work with plates and structural shapes in fabricating or repairing a wide variety of plant equipment.
- Repair or install sheet metal items on or around building.
- Perform general renovation type work on plant facilities.
- Perform painting work (brush, roller, and spray) of all types throughout the plant.
- Repair and maintain miscellaneous mechanical equipment.
- Rig and move heavy materials and equipment used in and about the plant.
- Work in conjunction with vendor equipment specialists, contractors, and other plant local workers in maintaining, installation, and troubleshooting of plant equipment and systems.
To qualify for the position, you must:
- Be at least 18 years of age at the time of employment.
- Successfully pass Differential Aptitude Test (DAT) – this requires a high mechanical aptitude
- Provide a written recommendation from an accredited trade school sponsor or prior supervisor
- Provide 2 (two) completed trade school instructor or supervisor assessments (Libbey will provide you an assessment template if you are selected for an interview)
- Be able to follow directions and act on instructions from supervisory staff
- Possess capable problem-solving and analytical skills
- Be willing to work in a manufacturing environment (noise, high temperature, dust)
- Successfully pass pre-employment tests (background check, drug screen, physical, and respirator test)
- Physical fitness and stamina to stoop, crawl, climb, bend, and lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs.
