About the Role
We’re hiring a Roller Operator to operate roller equipment as part of a paving crew during road construction and repair projects. This is a full-time, seasonal position that plays a key part in ensuring smooth, durable, and high‑quality paved surfaces. Union membership is required for this role.
What You’ll Do
- Operate smooth drum and pneumatic roller equipment to compact asphalt and other materials
- Ensure proper alignment, positioning, and speed to achieve optimal compaction
- Monitor compaction to prevent over‑ or under‑compaction and meet quality standards
- Work closely with paving crew members to ensure smooth transitions between pavement sections
- Conduct pre‑operation inspections and report maintenance or safety concerns
- Keep equipment clean, fueled, and ready for use
- Follow all safety procedures and job site regulations
- Communicate effectively with crew members and supervisors
- Assist with job site setup, including traffic control devices, as needed
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting and standing
- Ability to work long hours in physically demanding conditions
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Willingness to work outside normal business hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends
What You Bring
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience operating roller equipment or similar heavy equipment (preferred)
- Basic knowledge of construction tools and equipment
- Strong commitment to safety and quality work
- Professional representation of The Gerken Companies on job sites
