Basic Job Functions:
The Strategic Capital Equipment Sourcing Technologist is responsible for developing the near- and long-term strategies and ensuring its research, data analysis, execution of strategic sourcing and procurement of Capital Equipment. Key focus areas include:
- Technology and development: Development of strategy based on equipment technology and manufacturing process requirement to fulfill company metrics. Provides technical assessment of new and competitive capital equipment capability relative to existing toolsets.
- Market research & benchmarking: Resourceful in market research to collect, analyze data and create benchmarking as a basis for current & future capital equipment sourcing criteria.
- Vendor management: Provide vendor oversight to ensure business value (e.g., cost, service, quality, and reduced risk) and open communication on capital equipment capability improvement.
- Vendor risk mitigation: Ensuring business continuity planning, governance, and management for all types of vendor risk (including geographical, financial, performance related, financial, geopolitical, and corporate social responsibility/regulatory compliance risks).
- Equipment selection: Selection of capital equipment based on supply base criticality, contract T&C compliance, quality & performance metrics as well as vendor capability to scale for HVM. Support the successful incorporation of new capital equipment into high volume manufacturing production line.
Education/Experience:
- Master’s degree in Physical Science or Engineering discipline or Bachelor of Science degree with 10 years of experience in the relevant business.
- Ph.D. degree preferred.
- Experience in factory & process equipment design highly preferred. Understanding the trade-offs between total cost of ownership & tool capability.
- 10+ years in equipment/process development with global high tech, preferably solar, semiconductor & display industries, with strong commercial exposure and understanding.
- Hands-on experience working with multiple process equipment to resolve performance issues.
- Hands-on information gathering, analysis, modeling and management reporting.
- Proven leadership capability in working with capital equipment vendors.
- Membership in professional organizations and a pattern of regular attendance at industry conferences to enhance their knowledge in capital equipment technology development.
- Proficient in PC-based applications (such as Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word and/or Access).
- Strong and visible leadership. The position will need to establish authority within the capital equipment sourcing and engineering organization and influence cross functional teams, such as quality, EHS, engineering, finance & legal.
- Strategic thinking to shape the plan and gain buy-in from cross-functional stakeholders.
- Enlist strong process and project management skills/ability to manage change.
- Strong people skills with ability to envision, energize and enable the Strategic Capital EQP sourcing team and other functions, and, where necessary, lead performance management decisions.
- Have an ability to work multifunctionally across organization boundaries in a collaborative manner.
- Understand capital equipment technology tools & technologies that enable sourcing and procurement execution and reporting.
- Have mathematical/statistical abilities for cost optimization of the vendor portfolio (e.g. Total Cost of Ownership) while balancing trade-offs.
- Have proven negotiation, analytical, conflict resolution, collaboration, data-processing and problem-solving skills.
- Analyze global industrial trends to set the strategy for next generation innovation in process equipment development and drive continuous improvement for existing tools.
- Creative problem solving and ability to drive innovative solutions.
- Bring enthusiasm, sense of urgency and lean mindset to drive capital equipment improvement & innovation. Be comfortable with accountability to deliver major initiatives and financial targets with speed.

- Ability to incorporate applications and tools to enable, improve and scale sourcing and procurement processes. Benchmark and institute world class procurement and sourcing techniques, processes and practices

Required Skills/Competencies:
- Ability to assess broad range of capital equipment capability, process technologies, with strong science-based analytical skills.
- Work independently and in collaboration with global cross-functional teams to provide opportunity-focused competitive landscape analyses.
Essential Responsibilities:
Monitor and validate capital equipment technology roadmaps of top PV module competitors (standard Si, high efficiency Si, CIGS thin film)
- Develop strategy to perform market research using both internal & external data and providing quarterly technology updates to drive key capital equipment purchase decisions.
- Develop New Equipment Technology strategic sourcing model (Process & System) to enable capacity expansion with lean mindset & define balanced scorecard for quantitative and qualitative metrics.
- Provide early identification of potentially disruptive process tool technologies sourced from startups, venture investors and the academic community.
- Work with vendors to define and implement the right proactive risk mitigation strategies.
- Collaborate with quality, engineering, operations, product management and key vendors to ensure the successful demonstration of tool HVM capability.
Identify and execute value creation opportunities in the capital equipment supply chain with key vendors:
- Establish strong personal relationships with capital equipment supply chain leaders in key vendors for cost optimization, innovation, and proactive risk mitigation.
- Ensure that joint value creation activities with key vendors are captured and commercialized.
- Influence the industry agenda; get involved in industry groups to shape initiatives.
Develop the strategy and execution plan to deliver target vendor service levels, costs, innovation, and proactive risk mitigation, specifically:
- Lead the process of sourcing and procurement strategy development and deployment (five/seven-year vision/annual refreshing of plans).
- Implement rigorous daily management routines across the organization and hold people accountable to deliver. Implement diligent root cause identification of issues and clear actions to correct.
- Ensure governance oversight for vendor metrics and performance management. Drive the development of sourcing and procurement system improvements (working with IT as needed), processes and resources to reduce cycle times through increased automation.
Establish the right organization structure, and lead the coaching of the team, specifically:
- Implement talent development and staffing and succession routines.
- Drive an aligned, focused culture through clear performance targets and regular one-on-ones focusing on culture, mindset, negotiation process, stakeholder alignment and vendor development/conflict resolution.
- Promote a clear associate engagement strategy.
Reporting Relationships:
- Reports to Director/VP, GMO Strategic Initiatives.
- This position will be responsible for interacting and collaborating with peers across most groups in the company, including operations, engineering, development, finance, planning and business development.
- This is a management position with direct reports and significant fiscal responsibility.
Estimated Salary Range:
- $123,500-$176,000 annually.
Travel:
- Domestic and international travel required.
