Position Summary:

The Commercial Loan Underwriter is responsible for evaluating business loan requests by analyzing financial statements, credit history, collateral, cash flow, industry conditions, and overall repayment ability. This position prepares detailed credit analyses and recommendations to support sound lending decisions while ensuring loans meet internal policies, regulatory requirements, and risk management standards. The underwriter works closely with commercial lenders, portfolio management, and other internal teams to structure responsible credit solutions, identify potential risks, and help protect the credit union’s loan portfolio while supporting the borrowing needs of business members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Analyze commercial loan requests by reviewing business and personal financial statements, tax returns, credit reports, collateral documents, cash flow, and the borrower’s ability to repay.
  • Prepare clear, thorough credit presentations that summarize the borrower’s financial condition, credit strengths, key risks, collateral position, and recommended loan structure.
  • Evaluate loan requests to ensure they meet internal lending policies, underwriting standards, regulatory requirements, and the credit union’s overall risk guidelines.
  • Work with commercial lenders, portfolio management, and other internal teams to gather required information, clarify loan terms, and support timely credit decisions.
  • Identify, assess, and clearly communicate key credit risks, such as cash flow concerns, collateral shortfalls, guarantor strength, industry trends, and exceptions to covenants or lending policies.
  • Recommend appropriate loan terms, conditions, covenants, risk ratings, and approval requirements based on the borrower’s financial profile and level of credit risk.
  • Maintain accurate credit documentation and support ongoing portfolio management by assisting with loan renewals, annual reviews, modifications, and other credit-related requests as needed.
  • Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.
