JOB SUMMARY & KEY OBJECTIVES
The Controls Engineer will be responsible for developing and maintaining systems to produce high quality food products safely and efficiently. They will be responsible for the electrical design, component selection, calibration, maintenance, and documentation for all Food Safety related equipment. This position will also be responsible for programming, maintenance, storage, and backup of all appropriate automation software and projects, including Allen Bradley, Ignition, GE Fanuc, and DirectLogic among others.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
PROCESS CONTROL
- Programming, maintenance, storage, and backup of plant automation systems.
- Develop electrical designs and operating manuals for current and new systems, and prioritize projects in collaboration with Stakeholders, based on their expectations, timelines, and deadlines.
- Maintain and troubleshoot existing systems in collaboration with plant maintenance personnel.
- Ensure continued functionality and robustness of the system through backup, spare equipment, and training of essential personnel.
- Training of personnel on proper use of calibration equipment.
- Ongoing participation in process improvements that focus on saving labor, time, and material by using automation.
- Manage new and ongoing automation projects. This includes documenting needs, automation narrative, component requirements, procurement, programming, data storage/retrieval, and security.
RECORD KEEPING
- Maintain control system documentation.
- Appropriate recording of all Food safety calibration records and actions to be coordinated with Quality Assurance under SQF protocol and guidelines.
- All PLC/Automation files to be maintained on HCC file shares in a comprehensive manner and share training with Plant Managers for access.
- Develop SOPs for basic system maintenance and access to cover instances when Controls staff is not available.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical, Food, or Agricultural Engineering or demonstrated industry experience.
- Strong proficiency in PLC and HMI programming on Allen Bradley systems such as ControlLogix and FactoryTalk View.
- Experience with Inductive Automation Ignition preferred.
- Robotics experience with GE Fanuc preferred.
- Proficiency in industrial networking.
- Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills, analytical skills, statistical and mathematical abilities, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work with a wide variety of individuals with diverse educational levels, cultural backgrounds, and communication skills.
- Self-starter, able to lead cross-functional teams.
- Project management experience preferred.
- Strong project management skills.
- Strong proficiency in MS Office and Google Workspace products.
