The experienced Structural Design Engineer is responsible for reviewing, coordinating, and managing bridge component design projects for key contractors. Manages all aspects of the project including direct communications with the contractor and design engineer/owner related to project requirements, details, project status, and technical questions. Will oversee creation of high-quality shop drawings within budget while meeting drawing submittal and release deadlines. This is an on-site position located in North Baltimore, OH.

What You'll Do

Primary Accountabilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs and oversees structural design of Modular Joints, and other products.
  • Suggests and implements changes to design and/or drawing standards.
  • Provides guidance as the subject matter expert (SME) in multiple product lines.
  • Reviews and interprets project design plans and specifications at an expert level.
  • Checks fabricated/structural product shop drawings with a high level of detail to ensure accurate products are delivered to customers.
  • Capable of managing complex projects and working collaboratively with major bridge contractors.
  • In conjunction with Operations team, ensuring product designs are feasible and economical to produce, and that material can be procured and machined as shown to within specified tolerances. Very competent in working in a fabrication environment and providing support and guidance on highly complex projects.
  • Use computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare and check engineering documents.
  • Ability to compute vertical curves, horizontal curves, grade transitions, slopes, staging, and flared roadways.
  • Utilize company project checklist to minimize errors and provides input for the checklist’s continuous improvement.
  • Communicates with colleagues and Engineering Manager when necessary to resolve project and design questions/concerns, as well as to provide updates on how projects are progressing against set schedule.
  • Coordinates with customers and designers on such things as information requests, technical guidance, and transmittal comments/questions.
  • Supports management and colleagues in implementing continuous improvement initiatives identified in yearly and long-term goals.
  • Provides guidance to Estimating Department for calculating engineering hours and identifies fabrication challenges to include in the budget.
  • Provides on-site technical support to evaluate field installations and/or troubleshoot construction challenges

In addition to the accountabilities listed above, individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including work in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods or otherwise to balance the workload.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Occasional indirect team leadership and ownership of development opportunities.

Education / Experience (an equivalent combination of education and experience required to successfully complete the primary accountabilities is indicated below)

Degree: Bachelor’s Degree Major: Engineering (Civil, Structural, & Mechanical

Engineering Preferred)

  • Bridge design and/or structural design
  • Civil roadway design
  • Bridge modular expansion joint design – preferred
  • Working knowledge of AASHTO, owner standards and/or other structural design code, and possesses thorough understanding of engineering principles, practices and tools
  • Experience using AutoCAD, SolidWorks or MicroStation
  • Structural design calculations, experience with RISA, STAAD and MathCAD
  • Good geometry and trigonometry skills
  • Understanding of how products are purchased, machined, fabricated

Licenses/Certifications

  • Licensed Professional Engineer Preferred

Physical Requirements (Approximate time spent to be included in physical demands such as walking, or bending, specific lifting requirements (lbs) and/or other requirements such as vision or hearing.)

May be required to lift up to 30 pounds and sit for prolonged periods at a desk and/or working on a computer. Must be able to sit, walk, see and hear.

Environment: Office Travel: Occasional (<10%)

Special Work Conditions: Production environment may be loud and dirty
