About this opportunity:

Cenovus Energy is seeking a new Staff Process Controls Engineer for the Lima Refinery with a strong attention to detail, ability to learn, and the flexibility to adjust to changes based on plant priorities.

This role will manage the Alarm Management Project utilizing PSI Alarm Management database software within the Hexagon PAS PlantState Integrity Platform Alarm Management Software. The position will also carry out advanced alarm management (like dynamic and predictive alarming), alarm suppression (manual shelving, design suppression, and out-of-service), simple on/off delays to reducing nuisance alarms, and improving operator effectiveness. The Staff Process Controls Engineer will be responsible for the development, ownership, and maintenance of APC applications and will provide new/maintain existing DCS control scheme designs, control configurations, alarm configurations & operator graphics that meet refinery guidelines.

What you'll do:

  • Provide APC, modeling, and on-line optimization at the refinery. Provide direction for the refinery’s APC program, identifying optimization opportunities, creating best practices, and setting priorities. Work with other groups in the refinery as well as within the company to accomplish optimization goals. Responsibilities include development, ownership and maintenance of APC applications

  • Manage the Alarm Management Project utilizing PSI Alarm Management database software within the Hexagon PAS PlantState Integrity Platform Alarm Management Software. Carry out advanced alarm management (like dynamic and predictive alarming), and alarm suppression (manual shelving, design suppression, and out-of-service) and simple on/off delays to reducing nuisance alarms and improving operator effectiveness

  • Network with Cenovus central Downstream Technical Services teams, other Cenovus refinery and manufacturing sites and industry groups/networks to capture best practices. Network with Cenovus Downstream Process Controls teams to increase the utilization of DMC and other Advanced Process Control applications across the company

  • Provide new and maintain existing DCS control scheme designs, control configurations, alarm configurations and operator graphics that meet refinery guidelines and provide improved reliability/safety for ongoing plant operations

  • Participate in Design Review, P&ID’s Review, Engineering Milestone Review, MOC, Investigation, Hazard & Operability (HAZOP) Study, Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) processes

  • Provide Project Engineering support in accordance with sites standards and practices and provide ease of maintenance and increased reliability to the refinery

  • Develop control schemes in accordance with site standards that allow for ease of use for operations and maintainability and reliably for the Area Business Team Process Controls Engineers

  • Specify and procure DCS Hardware in accordance with site standard hardware

  • Manage and adhere to Engineering Practices (EP’s) in accordance with industry standards

Who you are:

  • Legally authorized to work in the US

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or closely related discipline required

  • 12+ years refinery or closely related experience required

  • Experience in multiple process units and a broad working knowledge of Honeywell control systems and AspenTech DMC and Inferrentials

  • Familiarization with Alarm Management within the Hexagon PAS PlantState Integrity Platform Alarm Management Software considered an asset

  • Familiarization with PPCL C Visual Explorer (CVE) analysis considered an asset

  • Proficiency in codes and standards related to refinery process controls such as: ISA 18.2 (Management of Alarm Systems for the Process Industries), EEMUA Publication 191 (Alarm Systems. A guide to design, management, and procurement), ISA 101.01 (Human Machine Interfaces for Process Automation Systems), ISA 106.00.01 (Procedural Automation for Continuous Process Operations), IEC 63303 (Human machine interfaces for process automation systems)

  • Experience directly applicable to the position: Knowledge and proficiency in Honeywell HPM and Experion C-300/SCADA configuration. Also experience with Experion HMI graphic design and configuration. Lin & Associates ALTIUS Graphics experience considered an asset
