About this opportunity:

The Staff Fixed Equipment Engineer will play a lead role in providing unbiased technical evaluations of fixed equipment issues to continuously improve the safety, reliability, and business performance of the refinery operations. This role will have key role in providing input and recommendations into Engineering and Technical Service team priorities, objectives, and strategic direction and will also help train, coach and mentor other Mechanical Engineers.

What you’ll do:

The Staff Fixed Equipment Engineer will be responsible for driving the technical depth and site influence of the Mechanical engineering team through Technical Excellence Leadership. This is expected to be completed through individual contribution as well as mentoring and coaching of the site Mechanical Engineering Team. This role will develop and implement best practices, lead diverse teams to troubleshoot and improve plant performance/processes, support unit outages/Turnarounds, and support the overall refinery initiatives. Overall scope includes all process units at the refinery.

  • Advises leadership on technical, capability and strategic matters, leading to wise business decisions. Steers the development of solutions and new opportunities that make a significant contribution to Cenovus

  • Contributes to the success of the team, leading by example in terms of learning, sharing of ideas and building capability. Coaches and mentors throughout Cenovus to build distinctive capability in our staff, ensuring a healthy talent pipeline

  • Operates routinely across functional and business silos, and externally via extended networks, to access and use subject matter expertise

  • Experience in delivering complex engineering design solutions to achieve desired performance

  • Applies scientific rigor to evaluations despite business pressure and constraints; prioritizes and sets clear direction, and boundaries in delivery of results

  • Drives cross discipline interactions; comfortable leading multidiscipline teams and providing recommendations to senior leadership

  • Incorporate learnings into, site procedures, EPs, and future improvement projects / asset strategies

  • Maintains site engineering practices across all disciplines by working with each site technical authority to review Engineering Practices documents, approve changes and deviations, and incorporate industry best practices and Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP)

  • Responsible for ensuring regularly review intervals are maintained

  • Responsible for maintaining engineering practice documents related to areas of static equipment (pressure vessels, heat exchangers, fired heaters, storage tanks and piping)

  • Ensure engineering practices are understood and followed in maintenance, turnaround, and project scope

  • Review capital project scope and provide technical expertise related to purchasing new pressure vessels, heat exchangers, fired heaters, storage tanks, and piping systems

  • Network with Cenovus central Downstream Technical Services teams, other Cenovus refinery and manufacturing sites and industry groups/networks to capture best practices

  • Develop where necessary and lead Cenovus CoP (Community of Practice) forums activities as well as participate in/present to industry technology forums

  • Ensure new technology options and industry developments are considered as part of strategy and project development

  • Self-driven with high levels of accountability and ownership

  • Deep knowledge of the refining business, relevant industries, practices, and regulatory processes

  • Extensive experience of skillfully interfacing with stakeholders, technology partners, regulatory bodies, and other third-party relationships

  • Has the technical expertise to provide high quality advice, proposes solutions, ensures quality of technical work, and leads corrective action

  • Has drive to continuously develop own expertise, and track record as a coach and mentor

  • Provides formal training for engineers across site and other downstream entities in area of expertise

  • Experience and understanding of Process Safety procedures, methodologies, and processes such as Management of change, process hazard analysis, and Mechanical Integrity

  • Understands risks associated with refining processes and provides technical leadership within site’s risk management processes

  • Able to lead and/or execute advanced Fitness For Service and remaining life assessments of existing stationary equipment, including boilers, fired heaters, pressure vessels, storage tanks and pressure piping using industry established guidelines

  • Proficient in Analyzing Problems/Troubleshooting & Problem Solving: Systematically determine the root cause(s) of problems through questioning and inspecting, and then identify the best course of action to take

  • Ability to quickly and accurately compare similarities and differences to optimize or detect abnormal conditions within the process, operation or repair of plant equipment

  • Participates and contributes technical expertise to Risk Based Inspection (RBI) evaluations

  • Evaluate and analyze inspection/testing data

  • Provide support to asset teams in the development of operational limits on stationary equipment, including determination of safe operational limits and alarm points, SOLs/SDLs

  • Has specific skills and knowledge of a broad range of refinery equipment, associated maintenance and reliability practices and test methods

  • Has knowledge and demonstrated project management skills

  • Is skilled in reading technical drawings

  • Is skilled in conducting an incident investigation and can perform root cause failure analysis

Proficient in codes and standards related to refinery fixed equipment:

  • Design and fabrication codes: ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code. ASME B31.3, ASME B31.1, API 650

  • Inspection standards: API 510, 570, 653, 530, 560, 660, 661, etc.

  • Fitness for Service API 579

Who you are:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering required. Mechanical Engineering preferred

  • Minimum 15 years’ experience working in refining or relevant industry required

  • Experience in multiple process units and a broad working knowledge of different refinery equipment preferred

  • Breadth of experience including some commercial, project, turnaround or similar non-tech experience preferred
