About this opportunity:

Cenovus is looking for a U.S. Specialist and Staff Environmental Engineer for the Lima Refinery. Reporting to the Sr. Manager of Environmental, this individual will provide environmental regulatory analysis, document applicability determinations for projects and refinery change activities, and assist with regulatory submittals including Consent Decrees and Annual Reports. As well as prepare permit applications and guide facility personnel regarding compliance requirements of permits issued by Ohio EPA and U.S. EPA

What you’ll do:

  • Preparation of applicability determinations, permit applications, and updating processes and systems based on permit monitoring, recordkeeping, and reporting including support for federal and state consent decree reports
  • Direct, coordinate, advise, and assist operations and other technical disciplines with permits and Consent Decree compliance requirements.
  • Partner with the other Regulatory Affairs U.S. Specialist
  • Guide environmental permit issues or conditions that may create liabilities for the refinery.
  • Prepare Monthly, Quarterly, Semi-annual, and Annual compliance reports, including tracking compliance and preparing compliance reports for enforcement resolutions, such as consent decrees.
  • Manage and update the refinery’s environmental management system tracking tool with updated permit and enforcement matters status and ensure that all environmental operating limits from permits and consent decrees are included in the computer tracking system.
  • Participates in agency inspections/investigations/audits and prepares responses to agency requests for information, as assigned.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of documents such as permit applications/modification and other studies and evaluations per document retention policies.
  • Create worksheets for the Management of Change (MOC) process and attend MOC meetings to ensure refinery projects are correctly permitted
  • Conduct Field reviews and audits
  • Interact with environmental regulators to obtain new permits and renewal of permits.
  • Stay updated on emerging regulatory issues such as environmental justice, regulation of greenhouse gases, and new emission standards.
  • Draft newsletters to alert operations of new and emerging environmental standards and risks
  • Be a great teammate and work on assignments that may be outside the scope of this job description to improve the environmental team and ensure environmental compliance at the refinery.
  • Assist in compliance determinations and provide regulatory guidance to operations.

Who you are:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience from an accredited institution
  • 5+ years of relatable work experience

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in chemical, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or equivalent technical degree with a minimum of 5 years of industrial experience preferably in a petroleum refinery or chemical industry
  • Demonstrated history of interpreting rules/regulations and translating them to an operating environment.
  • MS Office Suite and Pi Process Book as well as planning, presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
